The City of Grand Rapids has temporarily suspended its Emerging Developer Grant Program after depleting available funds midway through the fiscal year. This program, designed to support new developers with predevelopment expenses such as surveying, environmental assessments, and engineering, has encountered a significant backlog of $2.4 million in pending requests.
During a recent meeting of the Grand Rapids Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, Economic Development Coordinator Mackenzie Miller stated, “As of right now, the projects that we have approved have utilized the majority of our funding for the remainder of this fiscal year, which is ultimately why our team has chosen to take a pause for a second.”
The pause is expected to remain in effect through June 30, allowing city officials to reassess the program’s funding and future direction. The Emerging Developer Grant Program has been instrumental in facilitating development projects by covering essential predevelopment costs, thereby encouraging new developers to invest in the city.
